Russian Rings

Our popular 50th Birthday Necklace featuring the classic Russian Ring design.

Contrary to popular belief, Russian wedding rings doesn’t refer to rings made in Russia or worn by Russian women. Instead, Russian wedding rings refers to a specific ring design. Russian rings, also known as triple rolling rings, interlocking rings and trinity rings is an on trend design of jewellery that’s rich in history and meaning.

It typically features three rings, usually made from precious metals such as silver and gold that are interlocked together to form a single piece of jewellery.  The rings are made to fit perfectly together and move as one piece.

The history of Russian rings dates back to the 19th century, where it was used as a symbol of marriage and commitment in Russia. The rings were designed to represent the Holy Trinity, with each band representing one aspect of the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This symbolism made the Russian ring a popular choice for wedding bands, with the three bands representing the couple's past, present, and future together. Traditionally worn on the little finger of the left hand and then moved across to the right hand once married.

Since the 19th Century the conventions around wearing it have evolved. The three interlocking bands can now also symbolise other important aspects of life. One popular interpretation of the Russian ring design is the representation of family. Each ring is said to represent a member of the family, with the interlocking design symbolising the close bond between them. This close bond has more recently been expressed in this way with small groups of friends. They are worn as a celebration of love and friendship between the friends, men or women,  where each individual ring can signify each person inseparably interlocking one another.

The design has also evolved over time, surged on when Cartier  commissioned Jean Cocteau to design their now iconic ‘Trinity Ring. The designs popularity was certainly raised when Princess Diana was photographer wearing a Russian ring on her little finger next to a signet ring. Russian ring necklaces have become a favoured choice for milestone birthdays with each ring representing a decade of the wearers life and this is also often associated with special wedding anniversaries.

Design variations include variations in the number of bands, different precious metals, textures and personalisation. However, the classic design of three interlocking rings remains the most popular and recognisable style of Russian ring jewellery. Whether you're looking for a unique piece of jewellery to celebrate a special occasion or simply want to add a timeless classic to your collection, Russian ring jewellery is a great choice. With its rich history, high-quality craftsmanship, and endless design possibilities, this style of jewellery is sure to remain popular for years to come.
